A North English man has been charged in connection to third-degree harassment, but not before dismissing warnings from police when he believed the warnings to be fictitious.
On Aug. 13, police reported to 1211 Sandusky Drive in Iowa City to speak with a man who claimed he was the victim of ongoing harassment. The man told police Jeffrey W. Oxford, 44, of North English had called him more than 30 times over the course of a few days.
Police said a harassment warning call was made to Oxford, but Oxford allegedly disregarded the warning. Oxford allegedly proceeded to discount the officer “with insults and general disrespect,” police said. Police went on to tell Oxford charges could be filed if the harassment continued.
Oxford then allegedly called the victim and told him to “call the real law next time.”
After Oxford called the victim again, police said a second officer called Oxford and was met with the same disrespect as the first call.
But after the second police warning, Oxford called the Iowa City Police Department to confirm they were who he was speaking with. Oxford said he wanted to apologize after police confirmed they had given him the warnings.
Third degree harassment is a simple misdemeanor.
