(AP) - Iowa transportation officials say it's possible they will replace the Ankeny rest areas along Interstate 35 with two new rest areas.
The Iowa Department of Transportation plans to demolish the Ankeny rest areas in 2012 so it can build a new interchange. The Ankeny rest areas serves between 500,000 and 600,000 motorists a year.
Mark Masteller oversees the development of new rest areas for the department. He says the two new rest areas would be between Elkhart and Huxley or between Huxley and Ames. The department has scheduled a public meeting July 20 in Elkhart to talk about rest areas.
Masteller says the department's commission could decide about the rest areas this fall.
