Video 1
- I asked RB Mark Weisman about the kick return team. He is on that team. He credited the front line for being the catalyst. He rattled off all five guys' names. I talked to a few.
He also credits special teams coordinator Chris White, who directs this unit.
Switching gears to the young backs, specifically Jonathan Parker (the kick returner, BTW) and Akrum Wadley.
You never know when your time is going to come. No one knows that better than Weisman, who, once upon a time, was the No. 2 fullback before being elevated to No. 1 RB.
Video 2
- Junior LB Travis Perry goes over his job on the front line of Iowa's kick return team. Good stuff here on how it works and what the goal is.
Of course, they didn't plan the fumble that RB Jonathan Parker had before he burst for 54 yards on the opening kickoff. It's not all Parker (he definitely helps).
The KR unit is still looking for the big one, but it does lead the Big Ten with 26.53 a return.
Perry gave a helmet sticker for the 54-yarder to TE Jake Duzey, who replaced TE George Kittle who was out with injury last week.
Video 3
- Fullback John Kenny breaks down his job on kick return: We have assignments, but JP bobbled that one last week, so I just tried to find someone to block.
Also, Kenny brought up a good point. When KR is out there, something went wrong for the defense. The point is the unit prides itself on providing a spark.
Video 4 (below)
- TE Henry Krieger-Coble's job on kick return is setting the wedge and to try to get RB Jonathan Parker a good start.
It's a physical position. He does get a chance to look and see where defenders are coming from.
Again, another guy on the kick return unit talks about getting the big TD return. It might be a factor on Saturday. The Gophers are No. 2 in the Big Ten in this category to Iowa's No. 1.
