Rainy morning, cool weekend on tap

Your outdoor plants are getting a good drink this morning. They might need a warm blanket by Mother's Day.
Today's rain showers are likely to continue, in some areas, through mid-morning, according to KCRG-TV9 meteorologist Kaj O'Mara. Colder air filtering in this afternoon may be enough to trigger some more scattered activity. Thereafter, expect west or northwest winds to kick in this afternoon and evening, ushering in an October-like air mass to the state of Iowa.
Cool weather is forecast all weekend long, with a frost potential tonight and particularly Saturday night. Overnight lows are forecast at 35 Friday night and 31 Saturday night, which would bring a definite frost danger -- and a need to cover those delicate spring plantings.
Mother's Day looks dry right now, O'Mara said, with more active weather moving into the Midwest by the early portion of next week, bringing shower chances from Monday afternoon all the way through Thursday.
