Take care of populations most in need

It amazes me that conservatives are fighting so hard against SNAP (food stamps). The statistics show that a majority of people using SNAP are children, elderly and people with mental and physically disabilities. This of course includes veterans.
That we have even one single veteran on SNAP is a travesty because they put their lives on the line, and that children are taking the brunt of this is appalling. It's hard to see the rationale of going after this one program.
Instead of making more laws for loopholes for the extremely wealth in this country, we could start taking care of our most in-need populace. This makes me feel that many conservatives are more focused on money that on people's well being. I know not all conservatives are like this, just as there are people who abuse the system and take full advantage, but there are plenty of issues with how our tax dollars are being spent. For me, SNAP is the least of our worries.
We have military spending that is astounding and corporate welfare that staggers the imagination, yet we're going to remove food from the mouths of children because of some “takers.” Spending on this program, as a percentage of our gross national product is the same it was in the 1990s. And this includes our recent economic crash.
“Compassionate conservative” was a saying at one time, correct?
