They helped Cedar Rapids Jefferson get back to Fort Dodge. Now, Maddie Hansen and Alyssa Olson are the cornerstones of the future."Absolutely, with those two, I'm very excited about the next two years," Jefferson Coach Brian Erbe said in response to the selection of Hansen and Olson to the Class 5A first team of the Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-state softball teams, released Tuesday.A pair of sophomores, Hansen and Olson led Jefferson to a 33-12 record and a fifth-place finish at state. It was the J-Hawks' first state appearance since 2009.Hansen drove in 69 runs, the second-highest RBI total in the state, batting .500 with 22 doubles and seven home runs."I think she's the best catcher in the state, and one of the top three or four hitters," Erbe said. "The thing I like is that she's fully concerned about driving people in and doesn't care at all about home runs. She's so intelligent about the game."Olson, meanwhile, went from obscurity to becoming Jefferson's No. 1 pitcher in the span of a few weeks this summer."She was an unknown quantity. But, man, she had a great season," Erbe said. "I knew she was going to be decent, but I had no idea she would be this good."Olson racked up a 21-4 mark with a 1.03 ERA, striking out 237 batters in 163 1/3 innings.Eighteen area players earned first-team honors.Washington (Iowa), the area's highest state finisher -- the Demons were fourth in 4A -- landed a pair of first-team selections in seniors Maddie Bohr (second base, .397) and Kaitlin Buchholz (catcher, .453, 53 RBIs).The Demons finished 30-13, including an upset win over Solon in the quarterfinals. The Spartans (41-4) finished sixth and had three first-team picks -- third baseman Kara Misel, outfielder Taylor Nearad and shortstop Mallory Madsen.Nearad (27) and Misel (26) finished 1-2 in the state in doubles.Cedar Rapids Xavier sophomore Erin Drahozal (.424, 20-6) and Benton Community freshman Alyssa Wiebel (.549, 56 RBIs, 11-5) also earned first-team status in 4A.Felicia Schulty of Mid-Prairie, Erin Hosch of Monticello and Lexi Weber of Cascade were honored in 3A. Paige Wieland and Katie Springer of Highland, Kelsey Lough of Jesup, Shannon Laing of West Branch and Megan Bonnett of Iowa City Regina were 2A first-teamers.
