Margaret "Sue" (Schalkle) Wallace was the daughter of Earl and Lucile (Junkin) Schalkle and was born May 28, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa. She grew up in Earlham, Iowa, and graduated from Earlham High School as Valedictorian in 1949. She attended Iowa State Teacher College (now the University

of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls and graduated in 1953 with a B.A. in Elementary Education. While in high school and college, she played flute in marching and concert bands.

Sue taught fourth grade in Ames Public Schools and then after attending AIB in Des Moines for one session she became a secretary to Dean M.D. Hesler who was the director of Student Affairs at Iowa States University in Ames. She also helped the foreign student advisor in that same office.

While working in Ames she met Keith Wallace and they were married on June 19, 1956, in Earlham Church of Christ in Ealham, Iowa. Then they moved to Marion, where their children Schott and Linda were born.

Sue was a homemaker and attended all the activities in which her two children were involved, include in helping with Bluebird and Campfire group. During that time, she also attended the Marion Newcomers Club and joined the Marion Women's Club in which she was a charter member. She held various offices, including president, in that organization.

In 1958 she joined the Marion Presbyterian Church and has been a deacon, member of Martha Circle, P.W. and served various committees. In later years, she was active in the Cornerstone group.

In her spare time, she volunteered at Linn-Mar High School and at the Granger House. She played bridge in bridge clubs, liked crocheting, crewel embroidery making many crafts projects, quilting, music, traveling, collecting African violets and playing tennis. She especially enjoyed being with and helping her two grandchildren as well as attending their various activities.

In later years, she and her son Scott enjoyed traveling to some place in the U.S. every summer. She also belonged to the Red Hats Society.

Surviving is a son, Scott; son-in-law, Wendell Clifton; two grandchildren, Amber Sue and Ryan James Clifton; brother-in-law, Roger; as well as their children, Bryce Burkhart and Sharon Sterbis.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Keith, in 2003; daughter, Linda, in 2002; parents; an infant brother, David; and sister-in-law, Nancy Burkhart.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private burial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Marion.

Following the continued guidance from health officials, physical distancing must be practiced, which requires a limited number of people allowed into the visitation at one time. The use of face masks or shields is required.
