SONYA VASSER
Cedar Rapids
Sonya departed from this life on April 19, 2021, in Jacksonville, Fla., with her family by her side A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. May 8, at Lifeline Ministry Church, 1101 Oakland Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Sonya Helaine Vasser was born in Chicago on July 17, 1964, to Edwin Vasser (Georgia) and Gwendolyn Kates. Sonya moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1977 where she was raised by her parents, Edwin and Georgia Vasser. She attended Franklin Middle school and was involved in a variety of sports (volleyball and track). Sonya graduated from Washington High School in 1982, where she was involved in Debate and Drama. Sonya attended Believers in Grace Church in Cedar Rapids, where she made a confession of faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized early in her adult life.
Sonya was a jack of all trades, outside being a loving Mother, Sister, Grandmother and friend. She was very handy when it came to fixing things. If she could not fix it, she would find a way. Sonya was always planning and looking ahead at how to best provide or make a way for those she loved! If she had it Sonya would make sure to share with those she loved and those in need. Sonya battled many health issues (cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease) eventually losing her eyesight and her kidneys.
Sonya was preceded in death by her mother, Gwendolyn Kates; her stepmother, Georgia Vasser; her son, Ramone Vasser; and her nephew, Martez Ceaser.
Mourning the loss yet rejoicing her life is her father, Edwin Vasser (Chicago); her daughters, Keya Vasser (Atlanta, Ga.) and Mercedes McPike (Jacksonville, Fla.); her three grandchildren, Kyianna Vasser, DiAna Hroks and Nylah Joseph; her sister, Stephanie Vasser (St. Louis, Mo.); brothers, Edwin Vasser Jr. (Nette) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Kenny Vasser (Kim) (Waterloo, Iowa), Raymond Vasser (Deena) of (Hiawatha, Iowa) and Chavon Vasser (Sacramento, Calif.); Derrick, Darryll, Brian, Kyle, Doty (Jasmine), Paul Blakley and Morriel Smith all of Chicago; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sonya will truly be forever loved, missed, but not forgotten.
