She was a substitute teacher for many years. A lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and now the First Church United, she belonged to American Association of University Women and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years.
Shirley supported the University of Iowa Foundation (Men's Athletics).
She enjoyed traveling, including Hawaii, Alaska and especially was fond of Disney World. One trip was a tour of New York where they had dinner at the top of the World Trade Center 10 days before 9/11/2001.
She enjoyed flowers, gardening, roses, animals (especially dogs and cats and she raised sheep), ballroom dancing with her husband, the Muscatine County Fair, family, friends and a card club that was started in the 1950. In recent years, one of her favorite things to do was go to JB's for lunch.
Survivors include her husband, Walt; son, Tom and daughter-in-law Susan; granddaughter, Trish (Dan) Anderson; grandson, Joe (Erika) Lehman; great-grandchildren, Addyson and Perry Lehman; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Xander and Madison Bieri.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
