DES MOINES - U.S. Sen.-elect Joni Ernst has submitted her resignation to the Iowa Legislature, and a special election date has been set to find her replacement.
Ernst, a Republican from Red Oak, defeated Democrat Bruce Braley in the November election for Iowa's open seat in the U.S. Senate. Longtime Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin is retiring.
Ernst on Friday submitted her resignation letter to the Iowa Legislature. She had two years left on her term representing the Iowa Senate's 12th District, which includes six counties in southwest Iowa.
Gov. Terry Branstad said Monday a special election for Ernst's seat in the Iowa Senate has been scheduled for Dec. 30.
