IOWA CITY – A Iowa City man was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Johnson County District Court Friday for helping another man rob a convenience store in 2008.
Fred Reid, 29, was convicted by a jury Monday of aiding and abetting first-degree robbery. Reid robbed Gasby's, 1310 S. Gilbert St., Nov, 9, 2008. Ahkinea Cox, 32, of Chicago, also charged in the case, threatened the clerk with a knife. Reid brought the bag for the money, according to trial testimony.
An officer in an unmarked car saw the men driving a car with busted tail lights and after following them discovered them inside Gasby's robbing the store, according to testimony. The officer saw Cox threatening the clerk. Reid stop when the officer walked in with his weapon drawn but Cox attempted to run but was captured outside.
Reid will have to serve 70 percent of the sentenced before being eligible for parole.
