When considering streets, be inclusive

Regarding the June 29 article 'Bever Ave. sidewalk debate resurfaces” and a statement made by one Bever Avenue resident who believed the 'project would demean and deface the neighborhood as residents don't walk down the street, we drive.”

I would ask that he and others in opposition to this and other similar projects (e.g. a sidewalk or walk lane on 34th Street between Bever and Cottage Grove) consider the fact that your 'we” may not be all inclusive.

There are 'we's” who walk or ride a bike for transportation, as there are 'we's” who walk to lose weight, and 'we's” who walk to enjoy the day. These 'we's” are equally important and their beliefs, desires, or needs should be accorded the same respect as the 'we's” who enjoy their right to carry firearms or shoot fireworks as well as those individuals or groups who demonstrate to support or protest individuals, political parties, policies, beliefs, injustice, or world needs.

I honestly can't say that I would be OK with the city putting a retaining wall on my property or digging up my lawn to put in a sidewalk, but I would make an effort to consider the other 'we's.” I thank the city for recognizing and funding projects that help make Cedar Rapids a more pleasant place to spend time outdoors.
