Police arrested a Las Vegas man Monday night for multiple car burglaries in an Iowa City parking ramp that were caught on a surveillance camera.
MIchael T. Hannigan, 30, faces two counts of third-degree burglary, a Class D felony, and possession of a controlled substance.
Iowa City police released a surveillance-camera photo Monday of a man who they say was trying to open the doors of parked cars in a parking ramp located at 319 E. Court Street. Police said the camera captured video of the man stealing items on at least two different occasions on Oct. 7 and Oct. 16.
Police said a concerned citizen recognized the suspect after police released the photo and called authorities. Officers responded to the Court Street parking ramp at 6 p.m. Monday and found Hannigan on the sixth level of the ramp. Police said Hannigan was wearing clothing that matched that of the suspect in the surveillance video. Several items that were reported to be taken from the burglarized vehicles were allegedly found in Hannigan's backpack.
After being read his rights, Hannigan admitted he had committed the burglaries, police said.
Officers found marijuana and drug paraphernalia on Hannigan during a search, police said.
