Hu strong again as Kernels reduce magic number to 1

BURLINGTON - The Cedar Rapids Kernels got another great start from Chih-Wei Hu and reduced their magic number for clinching a Midwest League playoff spot to one with a 3-0 win Saturday night over the Burlington Bees at Community Field.
Hu threw six shutout innings to improve to 7-1. Brian Gilbert and Jake Reed finished up the four-hitter with Reed picking up his fourth save.
Cedar Rapids (70-61, 39-22) scored the only run it would need in the top of the first inning. An Alex Swim RBI single made it a 2-0 game in the third,
One more Kernels win or Wisconsin loss officially puts Cedar Rapids in the playoffs. The Kernels begin a three-game series at Quad Cities on Sunday afternoon.
