Fighting hunger at North Cedar

CLARENCE - North Cedar's Fiona Raney, Makayla Schluter, Breylee St. John, Mariah Berhens, Maddie Cornelius and Mikayla Burcum are leading the way to fight hunger.

Through Lead2feed, a student leadership program, these six students have purchased food to feed needy people. It is the nation's fastest growing free leadership program with more than 5,000 schools and clubs across all 50 states.

Students learn leadership skills and 21st Century Skills.

In order to begin the program, students had to come up with a team name and a slogan. The North Cedar team name is the 'Hungry Helpers” and their slogan is 'Feeding one family at a time.”

To generate ideas for food collection and food distribution, the Hungry Helpers contacted Jerry and Connie Inman from the Lions Club to see if they would come to their meeting and bring thoughts and ideas to the table. Hungry Helpers also had Mary Bendixen, the North Cedar High School Principal, come in to talk about the situation and some of the things she did at her old school to fight hunger.

Hungry Helpers wants to help families with food and educate them, teach them how to make meals via video trainings and show them how to plan meals and prepare a food budget.
