Cedar Rapids’s elementary school celebrates Blue Zones designation

The Blue Zone Project has hit another milestone in Cedar Rapids.

Harrison Elementary students held a ceremony Monday afternoon to celebrate becoming a Blue Zones designated school.

The school had to prove they made changes that keep kids moving, make healthy food the easier choice and teach them about healthy living.

Students celebrated with outdoor games and activities. They were also dumped water on their teachers with water and dyed their principal's hair blue.

Amy Russell, Principal of Harrison Elementary School, said the health and wellness team at the school really worked hard to make this happen.

'We looked at what are our kids eating, we looked at exercise, we looked at the amount of exercise, we looked at how much movement is happening in between learning and moment so they really did a little assessment on what we're doing here at Harrison,” Russell said.

So far, Harrison Elementary and Viola Gibson are the first schools to receive the Blue Zones designation in Cedar Rapids.
