The Iowa Department of Revenue believes tax information of 152 Iowans may have been accidentally sent to other taxpayers.
Officials learned of the mistake late last month when several taxpayers called to say they had received a letter that included a document with someone else's name, address, partial Social Security number and tax information.
“We have some documents that require manual folding,” Revenue Spokeswoman Victoria Daniels said. “During that process, some information made it into the envelopes that shouldn't have.”
The mailing was put together by the Department of Administrative Services, where officials indicated static electricity may have caused pages to stick together, Daniels said.
The Revenue Department sent letters earlier this week to 291 Iowans, including 152 whose information was inadvertently sent to someone else, and 139 who received those letters. The agency plans to offer a free year of credit monitoring to any affected taxpayer, Daniels said.
