Police say two men smashed their way into a convenience store early Monday morning, but only got some cigarettes before they were scared off.
Hiawatha police responded to Quick Mart, 655 Robins Rd., shortly before 1 a.m. when an alarm went off inside the store, which was closed. When they arrived, they realized the business had been burglarized.
Police Chief Dennis Marks said two male suspects were captured on video surveillance. They used a hammer to break the front door, but also set off an audible alarm. The men grabbed some cigarettes before they ran off.
“They were in and out in a matter of seconds,” Marks said. “Twenty seconds or less.”
Police were reviewing the surveillance images to obtain descriptions of the suspects. No arrests had been made in the case by noon Monday.
