Hoffman, Walter Hillis
Walter Hillis Hoffman, 88, of Marion, died Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Winslow House Care Center in Marion. Private family services will be held. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Mae (Jones) Hoffman, of 65 years; his son, Robert (Nancy) Hoffman; his grandsons, Andrew and Adam; and a half brother, Harold Goldsberry Hauberg.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; half sister, Marcetes Goldsberry Wishmeyer (Paul); sister, Pauline Hoffman Legg (George); and half brother, Chester Goldsberry Sr. (Maxine).
Walter was born Oct. 20, 1924, in Nebraska City, Neb., the son of William Hofmann/Hoffman and Emma Louise Hauberg-Goldsberry Hoffman. He graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids in 1942. Walter worked for Welch-Cook-Beals until going into military service with the U.S. Army. He enlisted in 1942 and served during World War II. Walter graduated from Kirkwood Community College. He worked 35 years at Dearborn Brass in shipping and tool making. He worked part time delivering meals on wheels until he retired.
Walter loved his family. He and Betty enjoyed wintering in Tavares, Fla., for 13 years. He also enjoyed wood carving, gardening, and weekends with his grandsons. Walter was always quick with a funny story or joke. He was a member of American Legion Post 298 of Marion.
