An Iowa City man was charged with assaulting a police officer after being arrested Friday for allegedly stealing wallets and money from unoccupied vehicles.
Police said Darryl M. Henry, 18, was found by police in a car in the parking lot of 520 S. Johnson but then started to run from the vehicle, throwing a purple and pink backpack onto a city street.
An officer caught up with Henry on Dodge St. where he started to fight with the officer, pushing the officer off him and balling his fist while swinging at the officer, according to police. Henry got loose during the fight and started to run again, but two officers regained custody of Henry and he was handcuffed, police said.
According to complaints, the officer sprained his thumb during the fight and had to seek medical help for chest tightness.
Henry, of 1401 Franklin St., confessed to police to stealing items from three vehicles, according to complaints.
He faces three counts of third-degree burglary from an unoccupied motor vehicle, assault on a peace officer and interference with official acts causing injury.
Henry remained in the Johnson County Jail Sunday on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
