Let’s recognize, discuss race issues

To the editor:
Everybody knows that it is taboo to mention religion and politics in a social setting. Current events typically provide a reservoir of safe, engaging topics appropriate for holiday gatherings, work functions or dinner parties. That is, until now. The ongoing situation in Ferguson, the murder of two New York City police officers, and the backlash against a public art installation in Iowa City, brought racial issues to the forefront of the American conscious.
As we say goodbye to 2014, I hope that we will not say good-night and good riddance to the tension these events beg us to consider. I don't know whether or not the threat posed by Michael Brown warranted Darren Wilson's response; I'm not sure why the national averages for individuals living below the poverty line is higher for black Americans than it is for white Americans; and I have no idea to what extent our nation's history of slavery and segregation has on present inequality. I do know, however, that racially motivated issues exist and that recent headlines have given many of us cause for concern.
Instead of suppressing the struggles of the past year, as 2015 begins let's recognize our race related questions, opinions and anxieties. The well-being of communities demands that we include these topics in our civil discourse. Future conversations with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, teachers, public officials and folks who live in different parts of town, may solve today's racial problems.
