Cheap eggs not worth cruelty of production

A Gazette editorial ('Eggs-acting demands,” April 27) discussed the conflict regarding standards for treatment of egg-laying hens in the United States. It mentioned that eggs are big business in Iowa and that eggs are a good source of 'affordable” protein. I think we need to talk more about why eggs are cheap.
They (producers) kill the male chicks in very cruel ways. They de-beak the laying hens. The hens are crowded in filthy, small wire cages. There is so much more, but those are some basics.

Eating eggs is a choice, not a necessity. I don't understand why more people don't see the truth about this industry and decide not to support it. Think about the suffering that put this product on your plate.
