The Motor City Bowl is no more
Mike Hlas Sep. 2, 2009 2:32 pm
It's a panicky headline, I know.
Rest easy, Iowa and Big Ten football fans. The Dec. 26 bowl game in Detroit still exists. But the Motor City Bowl has officially become the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, as this story from the Detroit Free Press explains.
General Motors and Chrysler ended their sponsorship of the game. Something about bankruptcy, I hear. I guess it was in the news.
The bowl has existed since 1997, which means it has lived about 10 years longer than I ever dreamed it would. The game has had a Big Ten tie-in for most of that time, but more often than not, the Big Ten doesn't have enough bowl-eligible teams left to ship one over to Detroit.
Iowa has never played in the game at Ford Field, which saddens me. I can think of no greater pleasure in sports than to wake up the day after Christmas and have Christmas all over again, a football game against a team from the Mid-American Conference in downtown Detroit.
Oh, maybe the Rose Bowl would be better. But why quibble?
Hey, seriously, good for Little Caesars for saving something for Detroit, and good for Detroit for keeping it. Now I have a poll question for you.
