Walmart shrinking plans for new Iowa City store

A new Walmart store proposed for 1001 Highway 1 West in Iowa City may be 16 percent smaller than originally planned.
The world's largest retailer will ask the Iowa City Planning & Zoning Commission on Thursday to amend its conditional zoning agreement for the project, reducing the store size from 175,000 square feet to 150,000. It also seeks to change the 25-acre subdivision approved by the city into three commercial lots.
The downsizing plan is part of a trend toward doing more with less within Walmart, spokesman Ryan Irsik said. He said the 150,000-square-foot store will be “designed to improve the customer experience.”
