Former Iowa Football Assistant H.W. Piro Dies

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Former Iowa football assistant coach H.W. "Whitey" Piro, who was with the Hawkeyes from 1952 to 1965, has died in Iowa City. He was 93.
The university says Piro died Monday at his home.
Piro was an assistant for Forest Evashevski and Jerry Burns, and helped the Hawkeyes win three Big Ten championships and two Rose Bowl games.
From 1966 until his retirement in 1985, Piro worked in the university's personnel department. He also served as an area scout for the Buffalo Bills and the New York Giants.
The university, in a statement Tuesday, says Piro was born in 1917 in Germany. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 3, and he grew up in Long Island, N.Y.
Funeral services will be Friday in Iowa City.
H.W. (Whitey) Piro 93, an Iowa City resident since 1952, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday morning April 18, 2011 with his loving wife of 64 years, Grace by his bedside.
