Scandal: A sports champion who drank alcohol DURING the competition

Name a U.S. sporting event where drinking in celebration before a contest ended would be acceptable, let alone grounds for everyone in the country to go crazy with criticism and anger.
This was the Tour de France, though. If you can't enjoy a glass of champagne as you bicycle into Paris, what's the purpose of even getting on the bike?
