Area teams galore in 2A rankings

Sep. 28, 2015 7:46 pm
They're virtually everywhere.
The Class 2A portion of the Gazette/KCRG/KGYM football poll contains seven area teams in the top 10 this week.
That includes sixth-ranked Williamsburg (4-1) and No. 7 Mid-Prairie (5-0), who collide in a District 5 game Friday night at Wellman.
Spirit Lake continues to hold a slim edge on Albia for the No. 1 spot in 2A. Despite a 4-3 disadvantage in No. 1 votes, Spirit Lake owns a 74-73 lead in points over Albia by the panel of eight voters.
South Tama leads the area parade at No. 3, followed by No. 4 Anamosa, No. 5 Norh Fayette Valley, Williamsburg and Mid-Prairie, No. 8 Mount Vernon and No. 10 Waukon.
North Fayette Valley whipped Waukon, 48-8, last week at West Union. Mount Vernon is making its season debut in the poll. The Mustangs (4-1) have won three straight after a Week 2 loss to Solon.
The Gazette area has been strong in 2A all season. In addition to the seven teams in the present rankings, Dyersville Beckman and Center Point-Urbana were rated earlier this fall.
Each of the six No. 1 teams from last week retained their spots, and Pella (3A) and Iowa City Regina (1A) remained unanimous at the top of their respective classes.
Two-time defending 4A champion West Des Moines Dowling is atop the 4A list for the second straight week. The Maroons receiveed five first-place votes and hold a 77-72 advantage on Bettendorf. West Des Moines Valley is third, followed by Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Washington.
Pella is followed by West Delaware and Cedar Rapids Xavier in 3A.
Regina has won 74 of its last 75 games, including 18 in a row. The Regals' closest competitors in the 1A rankings are Dike-New Hartford and West Branch.
BGM has outscored its last two opponents by a 142-0 margin and is a near-unanimous No. 1 in Class A, standing atop seven ballots. Algona Garrigan won a showdown last week with Belmond-Klemme, and moved up to No. 2. Denver is third.
Defending 8-Player champion Newell-Fonda continues to stand atop that class. Don Bosco is No. 2, and faces a District 5 toughie against No. 6 HLV at Victor.
