Area capsules for Week 2 of the high school football season:
CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON at CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Thursday, at Kingston Stadium (Kennedy is the home team, and fans sit on the west side)
* Records and rankings: Class 4A No. 4 Washington is 1-0; Kennedy is 0-1.
* Overview: Washington sent its regular-season winning streak to seven straight games last week, outscoring Cedar Rapids Jefferson 43-26 behind a healthy 409 yards of total offense. Tavian Patrick ran for 139 yards and a touchdown. Kennedy let a 9-0 lead slip away and fell to Iowa City West, 12-9, despite a productive running attack that featured Logan Wedo, Jay Blank and Tyler Dralle. These teams met in last year's season opener, with Kennedy grinding out a 14-10 triumph.
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER at DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Thursday, at Davenport (Brady Street Stadium)
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 0-1. Xavier is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A; Assumption is No. 8.
* Overview: Both teams are 0-1, but both losses came against top-five competition in Class 4A. Xavier dropped a 24-2 decision to top-rated, defending-champion West Des Moines Dowling while Assumption fell 41-6 to No. 3 Bettendorf. The Saints managed just 121 yards of offense, and the usually reliable ground game netted 2.3 yards per carry. But the defense held its own, and will key Thursday on Elijah Williams, who posted 72 yards and scored Assumption's lone TD vs. Bettendorf.
CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE at CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 0-1 and unranked.
* Overview: Though both teams are coming off opening losses, Jefferson surely has to be the team feeling better about itself. The J-Hawks moved the ball capably in a 43-26 loss to top-five Cedar Rapids Washington, and stayed with the Warriors most of the way. That's progress; now, the J-Hawks would like to establish themselves as the city's best west-side team. Prairie was flattened by Linn-Mar, 35-9. despite 96 rushing yards by Keagan Pinter and 186 through the air by Trey Beckman.
PLEASANT VALLEY at LINN-MAR
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Linn-Mar Stadium
* Records and rankings: Pleasant Valley is 0-1; Linn-Mar is 1-0. Both are unranked.
* Overview: Carved up methodically last year, Linn-Mar's defense showed some sharp teeth in the opener, a 35-9 eye-opening win at Cedar Rapids Prairie. The Lions were effective on both sides of the ball, jumping to a 21-3 halftime lead. The Lions got 131 passing yards from Ryan Schmidt, and more than 50 yards from three different ball carriers. Points might be hard to come by against PV, which dropped its opener 7-3 to North Scott. Spartans QB Chase Kipper passed for 107 yards and passed for 83.
IOWA CITY WEST at WEST DES MOINES VALLEY
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at West Des Moines (Valley Stadium)
* Records and rankings: Class 4A No. 8 West is 1-0; No. 7 Valley is 0-1.
* Overview: This intriguing intersectional game features a pair of teams trying to gain some offensive traction. West had to come from behind to get past Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 12-9; Valley was humbled by growing central-Iowa power, Waukee, 28-6. West prevailed thanks to a fourth-and-15, 33-yard TD pass from Aaron Bleil to Gabe Huinker with 1:59 to go, making a winner of Garrett Hartwig in his coaching debut. Soph QB Rocky Lombardi debuted for Valley's varsity with a 13-of-24, 153-yard performance.
IOWA CITY HIGH at BETTENDORF
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bettendorf (TouVelle Stadium)
* Records and rankings: City High is 0-1; Class 4A No. 3 Bettendorf is 1-0.
* Overview: City Coach Dan Sabers isn't a fan of punting, and that certainly didn't change last week, when the Little Hawks had a punt blocked for one touchdown and another returned for a score in a 14-0 loss to Cedar Falls. The defeat came despite yielding only 56 yards of total offense to the Tigers. Three lost fumbles stymied their offense, and scoring chances might be rare against Bettendorf, which allowed just 208 yards in a 41-6 opening-week win over Davenport Assumption.
CASCADE at IOWA CITY REGINA
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at Regina
* Records and rankings: Class 2A No. 5 Cascade is 1-0; 1A No. 2 Regina is 0-1.
* Overview: So, how will Regina respond after its first loss in 57 games? The Regals record-setting win streak came to an end last week, snapped by Solon, 29-28, in overtime. Drew Cook passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns (and ran for one), but a missed field goal late in regulation - one of two empty trips in the red zone - proved costly. Cascade impressed on opening night, dismantling 3A foe Maquoketa, 39-16. Derek Lieurance completed 20 of 26 throws for 305 yards and three TDs, including seven for 172 to Nate Bergfeld.
WASHINGTON (Iowa) at MARION
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Thomas Park Field
* Records and rankings: Washington is 0-1; Marion is 1-0. Both are unranked.
* Overview: After spotting Mount Vernon the first touchdown (on a fumble return), Marion scored the next 28 points and opened its season with an impressive 28-6 road win, getting 70 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Kory Walsh. The Indians face a dangerous, angry team: Washington was the 3A state runner-up last year and is coming off a 35-0 loss to Pella. Daryn Sebelius passed for 196 yards and rushed for 149, but the Demons were unable to crack the goal line.
CLARKSVILLE at CEDAR VALLEY CHRISTIAN
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at LaSalle Middle School
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0 and unranked.
* Overview: Cedar Valley celebrated its first victory in school history Friday, journeying to far southern Iowa and coming home with a 30-20 win over Harmony. That snapped a 22-game skid to open the school's football program. Tom Scroggs returned the second-half kickoff 68 yards for a TD to give the Huskies the lead for good. Now, it's back to work to prepare for a hefty challenge. Clarksville's Zach Sommerfelt and Trevor Fenneman combined for 339 rushing yards and seven TDs in a win over West Central.
SOLON at MOUNT VERNON
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Mount Vernon
* Records and rankings: Class 3A No. 3 Solon is 1-0; Mount Vernon is 0-1.
* Overview: Solon goes after its 12th straight win over its Highway 1 rival, and does it with a lot of good vibes. The Spartans crashed Iowa City Regina's 56-game win streak last week, 29-28 in overtime, when Brandan Childs hooked up with Connor Ham for the winning two-point conversion. Brandon Kramer ran for 119 yards, and also returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown. Mount Vernon managed very little - just 25 yards of offense - in a 28-6 loss to Marion, getting its only score defensively in Lance Pedersen's coaching debut.
DON BOSCO at SPRINGVILLE
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at Springville
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. Don Bosco is ranked No. 2 in Eight Man; Springville is No. 10.
* Overview: It's probably safe to say Springville harbors a grudge against the Dons, who knocked the Orioles out of the eight-man playoffs each of the past two years. Don Bosco is the defending state champion and posted a 38-0 shutout of Midland in Week 1. Springville proved that life after Elias Nissen is still quite fruitful, racking up the yards and points in a 66-40 triumph over Meskwaki Settlement. Tyler McDowell and Cody Blake rushed for two touchdowns apiece.
CENTER POINT-URBANA at UNION
* Site and time: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at La Porte City
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0 and unranked.
* Overview: If the opener can set the tone for a season, both of these teams have to like the way their season is heading. CPU got a field goal from Clayton Kramer in the second overtime, then an interception from Alec Burke to seal a 10-7 victory over Clear Creek Amana. Union handled Gladbrook-Reinbeck, a highly touted Class A team, by a 25-7 count. getting 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns from sophomore Isaiah Vaughn.
