Student alcohol-related charges up at Iowa State, down at Iowa, UNI

Alcohol-related charges against students by campus police increased last year at Iowa State University, but decreased at both the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.

That data is included in the annual report on campus safety and security that will go to the state Board of Regents next week. The report includes information from the police departments at the UI, ISU and UNI.

ISU police charged 583 students with alcohol-related offenses in calendar year 2012, a 35 percent increase from the 432 students charged with alcohol-related offenses in 2011, according to the report. ISU police tallied 1,077 alcohol-related charges in total in 2012, meaning 54 percent of those were students.

UI police charged 436 students with alcohol-related offenses in 2012, down 22 percent from the 557 students charged in 2011. UI police had 1,330 total alcohol-related charges in 2012, so students were 33 percent of those.

At UNI, police charged 38 students with alcohol offenses in 2012, down 48 percent from 73 the prior year. UNI police charged 98 people total with alcohol-related offenses last year, so students were 39 percent of that figure.

The alcohol-related charges include public intoxication, operating while intoxicated, possession of alcohol under the legal age, open container, bootlegging, providing liquor to a minor, attempt to purchase alcohol by a minor and serving or selling alcohol after hours.

Looking at all total charges in 2012 by UI police, 1,091 students were charged with offenses, up from 897 students in 2011. At ISU, 851 students were charged with various offenses by police in 2012, up from 691 the previous year. At UNI, police charged 80 students in total, down from 130 in 2011.

Sex offenses totaled eight at the UI in 2012, compared to four in 2011. ISU reported nine sex offenses in 2012, compared to seven the prior year. At UNI, police reported one sex offense in 2012, compared to seven in 2011.

UI Threat Assessment Program managers worked 243 cases in 2012, including consultations, according to the report, which does not list the annual threat assessment numbers for ISU or UNI.
