MONONA - Another great MFL MarMac individualsSpeech season has ended.
On Feb. 23, the individual speech group consisting of 10 students went to the district individual speech competition in Riceville for the chance to advance to the state competition at Starmont High School on March 9.
“When I started performing freshman year I would always feel so nervous, now I have learned that I can only try my best, and the rest is up to the judges,” said junior Sherée Scarff.
Out of the 10 students who performed, six advanced to state - senior Samantha Lester, juniors Scarff, Catie Lang and Tristan Meyer, and freshman Tyson Dolan and Austin Bernhard.
Unfortunately, none of the students advanced to the all-state competition, but the underclassmen hope to accomplish that goal in next year's season.
Although they did not make it to all-state, the students have fun just being at the competitions.
Junior Catie Lang commented, “The atmosphere is my favorite thing at the competitions and I enjoy making new friends and being myself,” Lang said.
“I make it a goal for myself to make new friends at a competition," Scarff added. "The entire reason for joining speech was to come out of my shell and meet new people. I actually keep little business cards that have my Facebook URL on them to keep in touch with other individual speech participants after the season is over.”
“I am very pleased with this year's individual speech program,” Coach Angie Killian said after the final state competition.
Next year MFL MarMar will be hosting the individual district competition for the first time in more than 20 years.
