C.R. Kennedy girls smack Jefferson, 61-38

CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids Jefferson led a lot of the first quarter of its girls' basketball rivalry grudge match Friday night against Cedar Rapids Kennedy, only to have things go south in a hurry. Really, really south.Or maybe it's more fair to say things went really, really north for Kennedy. The Cougars rebounded to take a one-point lead by quarter's end, then scored the first 15 points of the second quarter en route to a 61-38 blowout home win.“We've been having a little trouble scoring early,” said Kennedy Coach Dennis Roloff, whose team has won two in a row after a four-game losing streak, the longest of his 20-year tenure. “Once we got that first basket, things just kind of fell into place.”Kennedy (5-7) started getting its full-court press going, which led to a plethora of turnovers from Jeff (4-8) and ensuing easy buckets. Jefferson turned it over 30 times in the game.“If we hadn't used the full-court press, the game would have been much closer,” said Kennedy's Olivia Meier, who joined Courtney Strait and Kaylese Johnson with a team-high 11 points.Johnson, in particularly, was a spark plug with her output, which included three treys, coming off the bench. Britteny Steffeny had 15 points to lead Jefferson, which hit just 10 of 39 shots, including 2 of 17 from distance.Here is the game boxscore:
