WESTERN DUBUQUE 38, MARION 20
- Western Dubuque beat Marion, 38-20, on senior night.
The Bobcats scored first, taking the lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Gotto to senior Chaz Bergfeld, capping a 5-play, 81-yard drive. Bergfeld made an athletic leaping grab in the right corner of the end zone on a perfectly thrown pass from Gotto, and the successful 2-point conversion made it 8-0 in favor of Western Dubuque halfway through the first quarter.
Western Dubuque extended its lead early in the second quarter when Gotto snuck into the left flat after a handoff and hauled in a 7-yard halfback pass from senior Mitch Kramer. The failed conversion try left the Bobcats' lead at 14-0 with 9:14 remaining in the first half.
Marion got on the scoreboard midway through the second frame when Kory Walsh plunged it in from a yard out. Walsh's run finished off a 14-play, 72-yard drive, which chewed six minutes off the clock and brought the Indians within a touchdown of tying the game.
The Bobcats would pull away before halftime. Senior receiver Tyler Gansen found space in the middle of the Marion defense on a well-run slant route and caught a 22-yard touchdown strike from Gotto. Following a quick three-and-out by the Indians' offense, and a Kramer punt return deep into enemy territory, Gotto scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with just six seconds remaining in the second quarter. The Bobcats' two quick touchdowns in the waning minutes of the first half gave them a 28-6 lead at the break.
A 35-yard field goal by Evan Ellis and a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Dan Gansen pushed Western Dubuque's lead to 38-6 in the second half. Gansen's touchdown came on a 23-yard drive after senior Jacob Westhoff's strip-sack of Marion quarterback Isaak Hahn gave the Bobcats the ball with a short field.
The Indians would add a pair of fourth-quarter scores, but the game's outcome was never in doubt.
