Helmets are not enough

We have read and discussed with great interest the article concerning mo-peds (“On the road,” Sept. 13).
We have decided that it's not enough to wear a helmet, the rider needs to do all they can to make sure they can be seen on the road! At this moment, our daughter-in-law is in ICU at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines. An elderly driver ran over her as she was riding her scooter to work one week ago. He said that he couldn't see her. She was wearing a helmet and a winter scarf. She is suffering from severe brain injury. Perhaps if she'd been wearing a bright vest, had an orange flag or some type of extra riding lights, this wouldn't have happened. We are praying for her with all our hearts.
