Authorities say the bodies of twin baby girls were found in the trunk of their mother's car in Huxley by police who went to the woman's home after getting a request to check on her.
Officials with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation say when officers arrived, they learned the 22-year-old woman had given birth to twin girls at home.
According to a news release issued by the DCI Tuesday, the babies did not survive and their bodies were found in the trunk of their mother's car, parked in the driveway in front of her home.
Autopsies were performed Monday at the state medical examiner's office, but final results of the exam, including lab tests, may not be available for four to six weeks.
The investigation is continuing.
