Cousins, Thelma M.
Thelma M. Cousins, 99, of Evansdale, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, from complications of a fall. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball in Waterloo, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Wadena Cemetery in Wadena.
She was born Jan. 4, 1912, in Hubbard County, Minn., the daughter of Leavitt H. and Alice (Olson) Phillips. She married Arthur Cousins on Sept. 28, 1929, in Oelwein. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1961.
Thelma worked as a nurse's aide in Oelwein and Waterloo until her retirement in 1972. She then began her career as a senior companion for 20 years.
She is survived by a son, David (Wanda) Cousins of Evansdale; two daughters-in-law, Florence Cousins of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nora Cousins of Elgin; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sons, Arthur “Frank”, Carl, Robert “Bob” and Delmar “Don”; one daughter, Mary Soukup; four brothers, Wilbur in infancy, Dewell “Duge”, Dorn and William; and two sisters, Florence Holthuas and Bea O'Neil.
