It's very early, but Iowa City is staking its claim as the boys' basketball capital of the state.
Iowa City West remains atop The Gazette's Class 4A poll, with Iowa City Regina checking in as the new number one in 2A. This is the second rankings of the season.
West (4-0) is a solid top choice in 4A. The three-time defending champion Trojans had comfortable wins last week over Keokuk and Waterloo West.
The rest of the top five in 4A is North Scott (3-0), Ankeny Centennial (4-0), Waukee (3-1) and Des Moines Hoover (5-0). Dubuque Hempstead (3-0) enters the 4A poll following its win last Friday night over Dubuque Wahlert.
The Golden Eagles (1-3) drop to second in the 3A poll, behind Waverly-Shell Rock (4-0). Wahlert's three losses are to undefeated 4A teams and by a combined seven points.
MOC/Floyd Valley (5-0) checks in at number three in 3A, followed by Spirit Lake (4-0) and Webster City (5-0).
Western Christian fell out of the top spot in 2A after a 65-46 loss to LeMars. Regina (4-0) takes over, followed by Cascade (4-0), Dyersville Beckman (4-1), New Hampton (2-1) and IKM-Manning (4-0).
Beckman had an interesting week, knocking off last week's number 10 team in 4A (Western Dubuque) on an overtime halfcourt shot, then losing to this week's 3A number six (DeWitt Central).
Central Lyon (4-0) remains solidly at the top of the 1A poll, followed by Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto (4-0), Gladbrook-Reinbeck (3-0), West Hancock (5-0) annd LeMars Gehlen (6-0).
Lone Tree (6-0) enters the 1A poll at 10th.
