ISU Notebook: Cyclones take home weekly hardware
Sep. 15, 2014 6:03 pm
AMES - Just a couple days after taking the Cy-Hawk trophy home to Ames for its win against Iowa, Iowa State nearly swept the individual Big 12 weekly awards.
Sophomore kicker Cole Netten was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week and senior defensive end Cory Morrissey earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors, the Big 12 office announced Monday.
Netten was given his first weekly award of the season after knocking through two field goals, including the 42-yard game winner with two seconds left to push the Cyclones to the 20-17 win against the Hawkeyes. While he said it was somewhat nerve-wracking knowing the game could be decided by his foot, Netten just told himself to stay calm and said no doubt entered his mind.
'Just do your job,” Netten reminded himself.
'He's strengthened himself physically and because of that his game continues to develop,” Coach Paul Rhoads said during his Monday teleconference. 'He kicked off well, hit the extra points and field goals and was also an 11th defender for us in kickoff coverage and that's not lost in the coaches' eyes for sure.”
Morrissey also had a career game totaling a career-high seven tackles with three tackles for loss and two sacks. He was facing off against Iowa standout lineman Brandon Scherff throughout the game and said the credit for the Cyclones' success on defense goes to the guys willing to do whatever they could to be disruptive.
'The young guys are hungry to go out there and get some sacks and the old guys want to prove we could have done it last year, we could have done it a couple years ago, but we're going to go out there and do it now,” Morrissey said after the game.
ISU injury update
Iowa State saw four more players suffer injuries against Iowa on Saturday and Rhoads was able to deliver news on three of them.
The good news? Senior receiver and special teams returner Jarvis West 'will be fine” Rhoads said in Monday's teleconference. West was on the receiving end of a hit that resulted in Iowa cornerback Jordan Lomax being ejected for a targeting penalty and did not return to the game, but has been positively evaluated by medical personnel.
The bad news? The Cyclones have appeared to lose backup offensive lineman Jacob Dunning and wide receiver P.J. Harris for the season, Rhoads said. Dunning suffered a ruptured patella tendon while Harris was diagnosed with a fractured leg.
'Both have to undergo surgery and will more than likely be done for the year,” Rhoads said. 'P.J. may be able to be back later (this season).”
Starting offensive lineman Daniel Burton - who sustained an apparent leg injury - was not addressed by Rhoads in the injury updates.
T.V. time FOR Baylor set
The Cyclones fourth game of the season also will be their first night game when Iowa State plays host to No. 7 Baylor on Sept. 27. It was announced Monday the game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:20 p.m. and be aired on FOX.
'Nighttime can be electric in Jack Trice Stadium and we'll need it to be facing the seventh ranked team in the country and possibly the most explosive offense in the country. One that certainly embarrassed us a year ago,” Rhoads said. 'It's another opportunity and stage for us to take a step forward with this 2014 team.”
