Canney, Gloria O. (Frau)
Gloria O. (Frau) Canney, 78, of 436 Fleetwood Rd. SW, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, in Fargo, N.D., after an extended illness. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, by the Rev. Phil Thompson. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 3 until 8 p.m., and Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Survivors include her husband, Don; two sons, Kevin (Sue) of Cedarburg, Wis., and Mike (Paulette) of Cedar Rapids; a daughter-in-law, Lisa of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Noah, Alex, Meghan, Isabelle, Sieger, Gwendalyn and Alaina; and many nieces and nephews.
Her son, Tim, and brother, Francis Oberer, preceded her in death.
Gloria was born Dec. 6, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Alma (Hahn) Oberer. She married Donald Canney on Aug. 20, 1955, in Cedar Rapids. Gloria was a graduate of the University of Iowa and retired in 1993 after more than 30 years with the College Community School District, where she taught English, German, and directed many plays. Gloria also supported her husband for 22 years as the First Lady of Cedar Rapids.
Gloria had a deep religious faith, loved cooking for her family, and spending time with her grandchildren. An avid bridge player and bowler, in recent years she developed a love for playing video poker. Frau took great pride in her life career of teaching and welcomed the opportunity to reconnect with the multi-generations of students that she taught over the years. She and her husband enjoyed traveling during the winters to Las Vegas and spending the summers at their home on Leech Lake in Walker, Minn. Friends knew Gloria for being casual about herself, investing time in her relationships, and her natural ability to make friends wherever she went.
Her legacy of faith and family will continue to be a blessing to all who knew her.
Bis spatter Frau!
