Shannon, Margaret
Margaret Shannon, 96, of Oelwein, died Monday morning, May 27, 2013, at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein after a short illness. There will be a private family graveside service with the Rev. John Kerr officiating. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein. Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein.

Margaret Holmes was born March 17, 1917, at Tripoli, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Moeller) Holmes. She was raised in Littleton, Iowa, where she attended Littleton Grade School and Jesup High School at Jesup, Iowa. Margaret was united in marriage to Clifford Shannon on Oct. 24, 1937, in Minneapolis, Minn. She worked at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo, Iowa, before Clifford and Margaret started farming in the Westgate, Iowa area. After retiring from farming, they moved to Oelwein where Margaret was employed by Pamida for several years. Margaret enjoyed playing cards, dancing, gardening and cooking Sunday dinners for her family. She was a member of the Oelwein Golden Circle, Maynard Senior Citizens and the Kitchen Klatter Band. She especially enjoyed attending the Hazleton Friday Night Hootenanny.
Margaret is survived by two sons, Larry (Ruth) Shannon of Hiawatha and Wayne Shannon of Des Moines; a daughter, Marilyn Bennett of Oelwein; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford Michael Shannon on June 17, 1987; and a sister, Dorothy Jesse.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
