Hawkeye Schatz goes late in MLB draft

University of Iowa pitcher Patrick Schatz was the only area player to be taken Wednesday in the final day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.
Schatz was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 49th round. The junior from McHenry, Ill. went 1-0 with a 6.68 ERA this season.
Others with Iowa ties taken Wednesday include Sheldon High School outfielder Taylor Zeutenhorst (41st round by the Philadelphia Phillies). Indian Hills Community College pitcher Thomas Pereira went in the 42nd round to the Colorado Rockies.
DMACC pitcher George Jensen was selected by the
Tampa Bay Rays in the 46th round. Two other Iowa preps went in the 50th and final round: Burlington Notre Dame Cody Gabella (
Braves) and Sioux City North infielder Damek Tomscha (Phillies).
