UPDATE: No one was hurt in a fire that damaged an Independence home late Thursday night, authorities said.
Fire crews responded around 9 p.m. to 2180 Double L Drive, just east of the city limits. The homeowner, Joan Weiland, and four children smelled smoke. Everyone got out safely, but the family will be displaced by the fire, which caused extensive interior damage to the home's second floor. The fire also burned through the home's roof in a couple of places, fire officials said.
Firefighters remained on scene through 10 a.m. Friday, monitoring for hot spots. Insulation at the home rekindled a couple of times overnight.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
