Metge, Mary Cathrine

Mary Cathrine Metge, 89, of Des Moines, passed away in peace on Sept. 15, 2011, with her family at her side. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, 4600 Meredith Dr., Des Moines. Burial will be 2 p.m. Monday at Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Rd., Des Moines, where a vigil service will be held at 4 p.m.

Mary was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Stacia Elggs. She was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School in 1939 and lived in Cedar Rapids until moving to Des Moines in 1967.

A devoted and loving wife, mother and friend will not begin to describe her life. Mary was intelligent, caring, a great conversationalist and wanted everything to be clean and organized.

Mary is survived by her husband of 65 years, Edward “Gene” Metge; son, Greg (Maria) Metge; daughter, Roxanne (Don) Werner; and grandchildren, Joshua Hemann, Geoff Metge and Gina Metge.

She joins her parents; brothers, William and Lloyd; and infant son, Michael, in Heaven.

In lieu of flowers, Mary requested memorial contributions be made to the St. Mary's of Nazareth Building Fund.
