CEDAR RAPIDS - If you're looking to get a little exercise on Monday and you've got the day off, consider heading to Ellis Park in Cedar Rapids for the annual Linn County Mayors' Bike Ride.
Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett, one of several mayors in the county who attends the ride, has participated in the event since he became mayor in 2010.
'One of the reasons I participate is it's a fun thing to do,” Corbett said. 'The other reason I do is to continue to try to bring awareness to both the biking public and driving public that we need to promote bicycle lanes and safety in our community.”
The ride kicks off with Opening Ceremonies planned for 10 a.m. at the park, 2000 Ellis Boulevard NW. The 8.5-mile ride begins immediately following. A 2.5-mile ride is also offered. Volunteers are to be stationed along the route to help guide participants.
The main route takes bicyclists from Ellis Park through all four quadrants of Cedar Rapids before ending again at the park. The 2.5-mile course also begins and ends at the park.
Helmets are required for all participants.
The ride is free, but registration is required starting at 9 a.m. near the Ellis Park swimming pool.
Monday's ride - coordinated and sponsored by Linn County Trails Association and Bike CR - is billed as an opportunity for elected officials to interact and converse with constituents interested in trail development.
Tom Peffer, vice president of the Linn County Trails Association, said previous rides have seen as many as 400 participants.
'I think it's becoming more and more popular,” he said. 'It's a great time and a chance to talk to any elected official that shows up.”
