IOWA CITY - It's been a long time coming, but the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center is officially up and running and ready to host an open house.
The public is invited to the open house, scheduled for Sept. 26 from noon to 3 p.m., at the new shelter located at 3910 Napoleon Lane.
Animals first moved into the shelter more than one month ago.
Guests are asked to leave their pets at home during the event, which will offer a tour of the 11,236-square-foot facility as well as provide opportunities for volunteers or and ways to support the shelter.
Iowa City's shelter had been operating out of a temporary location on Sand Road since the 2008 flood destroyed the former shelter on Kirkwood Avenue.
The new center boasts more space, separate rooms for separate species, an animal evaluation and surgery room, more efficient heating and cooling systems, and other improvements that benefit animals and staff alike.
The shelter serves Iowa City, Coralville, University Heights, the University of Iowa and unincorporated Johnson County.
For more information, call the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center at 319-356-5295.
