Marks, Eleanor Walkinshaw Hubly
Eleanor Walkinshaw Hubly Marks, 99, passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2009. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at Cottage Grove Place, 2115 First Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, where Eleanor lived for years. Burial will be at Battle Creek Memorial Park in Battle Creek, Mich. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Born March 5, 1910, in Augusta, Mich., to Fred and Mabel Walkinshaw, Eleanor moved to Battle Creek when she was in high school, where she met John Hubly. She earned a B.A. degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1932 and was married to John Hubly a year later. They moved from Battle Creek to Youngstown, Ohio in 1949 and to Cedar Rapids in 1955. John and Eleanor were married for 48 years before he died in 1981. Eleanor married Stanley Marks in 1989 and he died five months later.
In addition to being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Eleanor had a long and active volunteer career. She was a member of the Junior League of Cedar Rapids, PEO, Monday League, the Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, First Presbyterian Church and the Cedar Rapids Country Club. She loved gardening, golfing, dancing and traveling, in addition to family gatherings.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles Walkinshaw; two husbands; and a grandson, Jonathan Boller.
She is survived by three children, David Hubly of Denver, Colo., Jane (Max) Boller of Minneapolis and Jim (Susan) Hubly of Seattle, Wash.; as well as her former daughter-in-law, Barbara Jo Hubly of Boulder, Colo. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, with the ninth expected in June: Kristen Petersmith, Bailey, Colo., Scott Hubly, Ault, Colo., Mark Hubly, Tucson, Ariz., Andrew Boller, Minneapolis, Matt Boller, Madison, Wis., Anne-Marie Boller, Chicago, Amanda Loudermilk, Seattle, and Cam Hubly, Virginia Beach, Va.; and 13 great-grandchildren. A great-great-grandchild is also expected in June.
The family would like to thank the Home Choice caregivers and Cottage Grove nursing staff for the excellent care they gave Eleanor for several years.
