CEDAR RAPIDS - The Xavier softball team began its season last week, preparing for its first game under head coach Brian Erbe.
Erbe, however, suffered a heart attack and had surgery. He will miss tonight's opener at home against Washington.
The team has no shortage of returning players this year, including seniors Lindsay Ireland and Kelsey Kuba-Tresnak.
The Saints ended last season at 29-13, ranked No. 16 in Class 4A.
The Saints have started their practices off with the same chemistry and hard work they had last year. This year, they are stepping it up even more with tougher practices.
“We really want to come out strong this year," Kuba-Tresnak said. "We also want to work together as a team and accomplish as much as we can in the season."
The Saints have the ultimate goal of getting as far as they can in the state tournament and possibly having the chance to take the championship.
Game time is 5:30 tonight.
