When will we learn to give up plastic bags?

If we are smart enough to get a man to the moon, why can't we find a way to get rid of plastic bags?
In the Feb. 24 Gazette, there were a few lines telling about Europe using baskets to go shopping. I still have mine I used while living in Europe four years. I first learned to watch how you bought your items; if you bought your strawberries first, you might end up with potatoes on top and when you got home your sorted out your vegetables.
I grew up in the 1920s when we wrapped our garbage in newspaper and it would soak through and you would end up with stinking garbage cans.
Don't say now we have disposals; not everyone has one and all garbage cannot go down one.
And why should I pay the store for the bag that has the store's name on it? I pay for the groceries; to me that is enough.
