Killing doves should be least of our worries

There is a new dove in Iowa called the Eurasian Collared Dove. They are noticeably larger and lighter in color than the mourning dove, with a partial black ring at the base of the neck. Older bird books claim they are indigenous to southern regions only; however, they are in the process of becoming established here and are a joy to behold at our feeders.
Unfortunately, the new/old Iowa governor and his ilk put these birds in the infamous Republican “cross hairs.”
I believe the dove hunting bill passed last week specifically targets mourning doves, but the law would be totally indifferent to the killing of other species, as would the hunters as well.
I applaud the governor's efforts to guide the state toward more fiscal soundness, but we are not so hard up that we need to kill doves to generate more income.
