Baschnagel, William L.
William L. Baschnagel, 79, of Iowa City, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. The family will greet friends Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Mark Pries will officiate.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Civil War Presentation Trust (CWPT).
Bill was born Aug. 28, 1933, in Iowa City, the son of Raphael Joseph and Dorothy (Lumsden) Baschnagel. Growing up in Iowa City, he graduated from Iowa City High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in Germany during the Korean War. Upon returning from military duty, Bill worked as a bartender at George's on Market Street, later for Stran Steel Corporation and also as an agent with AAA Insurance.
Bill began a career with the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk. He worked for more than 20 years at the Iowa City Post Office, retiring in 1992. He was an avid Civil War historian and enjoyed working in his garden.
Survivors include his children, Bill Baschnagel of Iowa City, Patrick Baschnagel and his wife, Heidi, of Austin, Texas and their children, Eric and Megan, and Bridget Barbour and her husband, Steven, of Knoxville, Tenn., and their children, Josh, Audrey, Lydia and Miriam; and a brother, Steven Baschnagel and his wife, Linda, of Las Vegas, Nev.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
