Nielsen, Eric
Eric Nielsen, 50, died at University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, of organ failure, with friends and family by his side. Services will be private. The family asks that memorials be in the form of a gift to a local school of your choice.
Eric Harold Nielsen was born on June 5, 1961, to Harold Roger Nielsen and LaVore Elizabeth Yenter in Ida Grove, Iowa. He went to high school in Minnesota, first at Shattuck-St. Mary's and then at St. John's Preparatory School. His lifelong love of chess traces back to speed-chess tournaments in high school. He attended college at the University of Iowa, graduating with a general studies degree focusing on biology and statistical methods. He was married to Theresa Hegmann on Oct. 31, 1986.
Eric touched many lives through his skill in teaching challenging topics in math and science. He was also an accomplished home-brewer and successfully completed the UC-Davis Master Brewer Program, including passing the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, London, Diploma in Brewing Examination.
Eric was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his daughter, Natasha Hegmann of West Branch, and cousins, Tom and John McSweeney.
